Electronic Medical Records Specialists verify and validate patients’ health information, including their medical history, symptoms, examination and test results, treatments, and other information about healthcare services provided to patients. Medical records specialists organize, manage, and code health information data. They use various classification systems to code and categorize patient information for insurance reimbursement purposes, for databases and registries, and to maintain patients’ medical and treatment histories.
Their duties vary by employer and by the size of the facility in which they work. Electronic Medical Records Specialists use electronic health records (EHRs) software, following EHR security and privacy practices to analyze electronic data and improve healthcare information.
An Electronic Health Record (EHR) is an electronic version of a patient’s medical history, that is maintained by the provider over time, and may include all of the key administrative clinical data relevant to that person’s care under a particular provider.
This program is designed to teach the fundamentals of health information management and electronic records. Student practices direct application of all medical insurance billing and coding skills and any other administrative functions of an electronic health record professional.
